Work Life Week 22nd-26th September

by TG Escapes | Sep 19, 2014 | Blog, Residential

The Working Families organisation is committed to supporting real life changes to help people better balance their work and family responsibilities, to which end they have been promoting National Work Life Week, in September, each year since 2010. The central aim of the organisation is to encourage a healthy society in which families are able to devote plenty of attention to both their work and home lives: working to live, not living to work.

The start of the week also coincides with World Car Free Day, which is devoted to encouraging everyone to leave their cars at home on 22nd September, taking the heat off the planet and applying it instead to politicians and city planners to reprioritise pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

We at the Garden Escape fully endorse both sentiments of work life balance and environmentalism but, given that the average daily commute of a British worker is about 55 minutes and 11 miles long, appreciate that walking or cycling to work next Monday is not an entirely viable option for many of us. So why not instead make a commitment to work from home for the day? Indeed, if your employer is truly enlightened, make a bid for a work from home week and get a true taste of the benefits it can offer to both your work and your family.

Why not use your 55 minutes of commuting time to pack in a brisk walk before you settle down to work, to get your heart and mind pumping, to de-stress and to plan your day. Or you could use it to cook something special for a shared family meal at the end of the day. Or you could simply use it to catch up on your backlog of work, which in itself will promote a greater feeling of control and peace of mind, freeing you to enjoy your family after a productive day’s endeavours.

And remember: you can love your job but your job will not love you back. Nor will it share with you the story of its day, or snuggle up with you on a chilly autumnal evening.

“To put the world right in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order we must first cultivate our personal life; we must first set our hearts right.”

-Confucius
