Butterflies

by TG Escapes | Aug 6, 2014 | Blog, Residential

All this glorious weather has suited the butterflies perfectly. As the children, the dog and I have ambled and yomped through the sun dappled shade of woods, meandered along the river bank or lazed in wind tousled meadows we have been mesmerised by the sight of hosts of beautiful butterflies. It’s not for nothing that many of our finest poets have been inspired to write about these gorgeous creatures.

I've watched you now a full half-hour;
Self-poised upon that yellow flower
And, little Butterfly!  Indeed
I know not if you sleep or feed.
How motionless! - not frozen seas
More motionless! and then
What joy awaits you, when the breeze
Hath found you out among the trees,
And calls you forth again!
~William Wordsworth, "To a Butterfly"

The butterfly, a cabbage-white,
(His honest idiocy of flight)
Will never now, it is too late,
Master the art of flying straight.
~Robert Graves, "Flying Crooked"

Here are just some of the species we were able to identify thanks to the brilliant website British Butterflies:

So why not entice your children outside today and see how many varieties you can spot?

And if you all sit quietly for a while, you might be rewarded with a butterfly kiss.

May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun
And find your shoulder to light on,
To bring you luck, happiness and riches
Today, tomorrow and beyond.
~Irish Blessing
