Summer in Full Bloom

by Robyn Fletcher | Jul 15, 2015 | Blog, Residential

With the midsummer solstice almost a month behind us, nature is settling into the summer vibe. Skys are more often blue than not; the greens of foliage and grass have reached their uniform summer peak and even the birds are chilling.

It is a time to walk on the wild side or to sit back and bask in the beauty of your garden, once you’ve cut the grass which is most definitely not getting into a lazy summer mood!

Whilst the tree canopy is at its most dense, there are few flowers blooming on the woodland floors, but there is still a riot of colour to be found in the clearings, at the edges of footpaths and in the hedgerows and meadows. Alongside the ubiquitous bramble blossom, cowslips, foxgloves and meadowsweet are in full flower. And, if you haven’t had a meadow fix this year, now is the time to enjoy the spectacle of whispering grasses studded with poppies, buttercups, oxeye daisies and knapweed, as mowing time is drawing nigh.

Many of our native butterflies and bees are currently on the wing, savouring Mother Nature’s season of nectar plenty and animating the tranquil summer backdrops to be enjoyed, whether you are yomping in the great outdoors or taking it easy in your back yard. Take a moment to appreciate their transient beauty, whether it be the simple purity of the Whites and Brimstones, or the bold patterns of the Peacocks, Red Admirals and Commas, to name but a few.

But it is not only the wildlife that is thriving in this rather gorgeous summer that is blessing us with its presence, the garden is also flourishing. Roses, hydrangeas, geraniums and fuchsias are all battling for first place in the summer colour contest, supported by the more understated beauty of the campanulas, salvias and anemones.

So, once you have finished mowing, deadheading, watering and weeding (unfortunately, the weeds are also having a field day) join the birds, chill out and just enjoy the scents and sights of summer. Whether it’s a blazing sunny day, or one with a welcome showery drenching, the opportunity to just sit, look and watch is so much easier in the shade and shelter of a Garden Escape: somewhere to just sit peacefully and watch, sniff and listen.
