Boost your creativity and walk to work in a Garden Office

Next week (12th to 16th May) is Walk to Work Week. You should give it a crack - walking is good for you on so many levels. Hippocrates deemed that “walking is man’s best medicine” whilst Nietzsche purported that “all truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” Regular exercise will serve to lower your weight and bmi which, in turn, reduces the risk of suffering from a whole gamut of 21st century, sedentary lifestyle nasties like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Walking will improve your sleep patterns, reduce fatigue and help combat stress, anxiety and depression. As blood flow to the brain increases and endorphins work their magic, your mood will lift and mental fog will blow away. You will arrive at your desk calm and focussed, ready to conquer the world
or at least vanquish your things to do list by lunchtime, leaving the afternoon free for a creative splurge.

And then the rest of your colleagues arrive. Alan from accounts stops by Steve the secretary’s desk for a very loud and way too graphic discussion about yesterday evening’s big night out, all the while chomping on an extremely smelly sausage sarnie. Poor old Doreen is having a life crisis, which she just has to share; Gary the trainee wonders if you have a moment to repeat everything you explained yesterday and Belinda the boss would just like a quick five minute barracking session. And then it’s time to grab a quick coffee from the machine (where Doreen lurks and witters) before the first meeting of the day, which overruns and adds three more items to your things to do list that is sitting: waiting and undone. And then its lunchtime. Creativity takes a back seat as distractions get the upper hand.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could spend at least some of your working week in a distraction free haven of activity and creativity, an office in your own back garden? Each day you work in it, you get to walk to work. Preferably taking the long way round - a quick mile or two ought to get the heart rate and brain going and will probably only take a fraction of the time of your normal commute. Before you know it, your things to do list is done. Doreen and Gary have found another victim and if Belinda is having a bad day she has dumped it on someone else. Your afternoon beckons....time for another quick walk to get the appetite piqued and creative drive in gear.
